What Is Government SEO?
It might be strange to think of governments as needing SEO services, but local, state, and national governments have a vested interest in managing their reputations and disseminating their messages in the same way that businesses do. Government SEO is defined as anything a government—at any level—does to ensure that the information that internet users are looking for is the information that those users get. After all, in today’s internet-focused society, you are who Google says you are, whether that characterization is correct or not. Why not make sure that you are being accurately and fairly represented on the internet instead of allowing others to paint their own pictures of you?
Challenges to Government SEO
The primary challenge to government SEO and online reputation management is that we just aren’t used to thinking of governments as being “user friendly.” And despite the desire of government officials to be easily accessible, transparency and accessibility simply aren’t the government’s forte, no matter what level of government we’re talking about. So if it’s true that governments will benefit by getting on the Web 2.0 bandwagon and building relationships with their constituents, then they’re going to need a lot of help.
But Why Do Governments Need to Worry About This at All?
First, governments are often seen by citizens as impenetrable monoliths and bastions of red tape that are best avoided at all costs. Thus while many government agencies post helpful information on their websites—anything from public policy information to how to renew a driver’s license—users are reticent to use those websites because they have a reputation for being unwieldy and frustrating. But if governments could demonstrate to citizens that information is easily accessed on a website, those governments would 1) be seen as the friend rather than the enemy, and 2) save a lot of person-hours typically used to answer redundant questions over the phone that could be easily answered on a website.
Second, governments need SEO so that they can distribute accurate information about proposed plans and policies. The current situation regarding healthcare in the United States is a great example of government need for reputation management achieved by SEO services. President Obama is in the process of selling his plan for public health insurance, and citizens of the country are interested in finding out more about this plan and how it might affect them. How helpful it would be if, when an ordinary citizen conducted a Google search on the “proposed public health insurance plan,” that person could find an exact copy of the proposal instead of criticisms of such a plan by dissenters. Governments need SEO so that they can disseminate accurate information.
Third, governments need SEO so that they can help citizens avoid scams. A current example is loan modification. If the government is offering loan modification to its citizens, then the very first search result that appears when an internet user types the words “loan modification” into a search engine should be the government’s official page regarding its loan modification program. While a “guaranteed free loan modification” might be attractive to an internet user, that user would be much better off getting the correct information from the government website that from scammers looking to a make a quick and easy buck.
